Lesson 3 Look into my eyes

We occasionally have to describe our appearance in e-mails or on the phone. Junko and Tracy are talking on the phone.

Junko: I’ll meet you at the South Exit of Shinjuku Station. I will be carrying a red handbag. Also, I have long black hair and black eyes.
Tracy: You have black eyes!? What happened?

Why is Tracy surprised? She is surprised because we get black eyes by being hit in the face. The skin around the eye becomes dark, so we call it a "black eye." Junko should say "I have dark brown eyes." Telling people that you have black eyes might give them the wrong image of you.
