Lesson 15 Give this a taste
Anyone who watches Japanese TV quickly learns that Japanese people really like eating and talking about food. But what does Ryoma get wrong in his description?
Brenda: What are you eating?
Ryoma: Potato chips. They’re curry taste. Do you want to try some?
Did you spot the mistake? The potato chips are curry flavored, not taste. We use “taste” as a verb to describe flavor: “What do the chips taste of?” “They taste of curry.” As a noun, taste means 味覚. Anyway, I’m going to drink some caramel flavored coffee.
