Lesson 14 Who’s in charge here?
The first few weeks after starting a new job can be very stressful, as I’m sure you all know. John asks Yasuko how her new job is going. What does she say that surprises him?
John: So Yasuko, how’s your new job going?
Yasuko: Good. I’m in charge of a new product development project.
John: Wow! That was quick! You’ve been working there only 3 months.
Why is John so surprised? Well, “to be in charge” means to be the boss or leader, so Yasuko just said she is the project leader, which is very impressive after only 3 months. But Yasuko is actually only a team member, so she should say, “I’m involved in a new product development project.” So don’t confuse people by saying you’re in charge when you’re only involved.
