Lesson 45 Come here
ポイント
You probably know that in English we come and go “to” places (“I’ll go to Osaka”). But there are exceptions.
ダイアログ
John: Congratulations on graduating university, Masa! What will you do now?
Masa: First, I’m going to overseas for a vacation.
解説
So, where is Masa going? “Overseas” isn’t a real place: to someone in Japan, Britain is overseas, whereas to someone in Britain, Japan is overseas. So we go overseas, not go to overseas. The same is true for “here” (“Please come here”) and “there” (“Please go there”). It’s also true for “home” (“He went home”). But note that although “home” isn’t a real place, “my home” and “your home” are real places, so we use “to”: “I’ll go to his home” and “please come to my home.”
